Just thought I would share a bit about my latest obsession, Mass Effect for Xbox 360. The game is fundamentally similar to the Knights of the old Republic series, with the addtions of a better combat system, enhanced graphics, and much more freedom to explore. The game is a sci fi nerds wet dream, in which you fly around the universe taking on various missions, from killing infected colonists, to rescuing galactic senators, to discovering ancient ruins on strange planets.

The game combines third person shooting with RPG elements flawlessly. What really makes this game stand apart is it’s deep back story and story. The histories of all the aliens, previous wars, technology, government and planets are given in great detail, immersing your character in the alien culture. The game is also fully voice acted, so there is barely any reading of long dialog.

Character creation is a modified system using parts from KOTOR and NWN2. There are 3 main character types; Soldiers (weapon specialists), Techs (Technology users) and Biotics (a sort of scientific magic). There are at total of 6 classes to choose from, which are either the main characters types or combinations of them (ie. The Inflitrator combines Combat and Tech skills). Your character, and your companions (you use 2 at a time) level up by gaining XP and use skill points to enhance various abilities from improving your accuracy and damage with sniper rifle to using your tech skills to control hosile robotics.

This is the deepest and most well polished game I have played for the 360 (and I fully completed Oblivion). I recommend it to any fan of the KOTOR series or any sci fi geek. If only there was multiplayer!

***edit** I just realized that I posted this in the Out of Game forum and it should be in Makes you go Hmm. My bad!

They have TV specials running on this game. It is supposed to be something special and it’s nice to hear that it backs up the hype.

Sounds really good… I may have to look into a 360 system after all. *sighs*

    Thanks for the review!

I’m proud to admit that I still play my original NES, Final Fantasy 1 is still my favorite RPG behind the NWN games(which may be MMORPGs).

I was just a kid when FF1 came out and I must have played through that game 20 times. I tried all sorts of party combos including; all fighters, all monks, all red wizards, all thieves, and my favorite 3 black wizards and 1 red. I could still go through that game blindfolded. On a side note, I recently parted with my copy of FF1 (still in it’s original box, with all the maps) and the Nintendo Power Strategy guide, selling it on ebay for 45 bucks plus shipping. I was a difficult decision, but my wife has pressed my to get rid of some of my old junk.

You haven’t lived until you’ve played Uncharted Waters on the NES. 😉

It’s still my favourite RPG of all time.

Double Dragon? I think they might. And no, I am not buying any of those wrestling games, no matter how much fun they could be if inebriated.

Nobody got out of that move in that game

I mean, come on, it had these guys as end bosses. Recall the absolute terror as they ( very slowly and relentlessly)set you up for the doomsday device and you could NOTHING about it.

Who hasn’t from the steriod years of the old WWF ?

The other one ( Animal I think), has a kid tearing it up as a linebacker somewhere. He was a terror in college but I’m not sure he is still there or was drafted somewhere this last year. One of those undersized but feisty guys.

I always liked the dwarf, he had that unstopable axe roll move.

James Laurinaitis is the boys name… starting middle linebacker for Ohio State Buckeyes. He’s “only” listed at 6’3″, 244 lb fast and mean, pretty sure he’s in his senior year right now… I’ll have to poke around.

Uhh… he’s a Junior this year… too bad he’s on the wrong team, I can’t root for him. Damn Buckeyes…

Pretty sure Gallery would thump his azz and that’s all that matters.

How big is Gallery now? Saw him the other day on the tube and it looked like a field of boys standing around a man.

That pretty much is bad ass right there… except I hated the pink lizard birds that swung their tail… if I were in there I’d only ride the fire spitting lizard thingys.

    Of course he is.

Muddy’s corn connections come through again. 😆

Edit-turns out Gallery is much better as a Guard rather than a tackle, allows him to do some roadgrating and he can fire out at speedrushers rather than being a turnstile. He’s bulked up for the move, fits the system well. He may not be a bust after all.

    Valgrimm…

Okay… So I broke down and got ME & a 360. I loved KotOR I and II. I also loved a game called Starflight I and II.

Mass Effect plays basically like KotOR, but set in the Starflight universe where you could fly to various systems, and land on planets and find interesting things like ruins or pirates or crashed ships!!!

The list goes on and on.

I love this game!!! So, what character class are you playing? I went with an Engineer because he sounded cool… BUT, I play him more like a soldier class. Stupid I know, but I’m just not used to all the extra things that he can do and the way to activate them yet. Maybe later on I’ll truly play him more like the way he was meant to be played.

So, what system did you explore first? Think I went with Noveria. Hey… How many items can you pick up? I must have tons of stuff by now. Is there a limit???

    Thanks Val,
    Cor

I played through the game twice with an infiltrator on normal and hardcore modes. Sadly I only reached level 59 (1 short of the max) My infilitrator also had relations with the blue alien chic, it was hot (JK)….I used the infiltrator because I am a big fan of the sniper rifle and I thought being able to unlock stuff would be important, it really wasn’t. I got bogged down with too much gear (150 items is the max) and by the time I hit level 50 I had all the best stuff, so I turned everything into omni gel after that. When unlocking stuff, you use the highest skill of you or your companions, so if you have one of them take a bunch of decryption, theres no need for it. As you get to high levels on hardcore and insanity the need for biotics become apparent. Enemies become so well shielded and have so many abilities that biotics are needed to freeze or nuetralize them. You really have to use some strategy to take out a room full of geth or krogans (i hate those guys). You pretty much can cruise through normal only using a pistol.

You should check out some of the unlockables. When you use certain weapons or abilities you can unlock the xbox awards. Some of them let you use those abilities if you create a new character. For example I started a new adept character and added the machine gun, giving the adept a little combat skill. I am playing this character on insanity difficulty.

Another little nugget I found was that if you beat the game, you can use your character again, in the next playthrough, keeping all your gear. I played through as a paragon and then a renegade. I thought it was fun to kill some of the npcs and punch some people out, but the paragon story was much better and there were far more quests available.

As far as my course through the game, originally after leaving the citidel I went planet hopping, building levels and doing sidequest. I had done a bulk of the sidequest before I went to rescue the blue chic. I also used all of the characters evenly, which I later discovered isn’t the best idea. If you use the same companions for a certain number of missions, you earn more of those unlockable points and your character is granted bonus such as better shielding or more health. In my second playthrough, the renegade biggot, I used only the humans, and was nasty to all the alien companions, I even killed one of them.

I have read online scuttlebutt of 2 sequels planned for ME, where you can use your same character and decisions you’ve made in the first game carry into the next. We will see, I heard this about KOTOR 2 too.

Corg let me know when you finish it and I will let you know the two endings I’ve gotten. If you get stuck or need any tips, let me know.

Thanks for all the info Val, it’s a BIG help.

150 item limit? Guess I’d better get into that Equipment screen and start making things into Omni-Gel.

I don’t suppose it tells ya when you’ve hit the item limit, eh? I’m only level 17 but I’ve probably hit the limit already. 🙂

Being the Engineer I have a pretty high decryption skill and usually unlock all the things myself. Good to know that I don’t have to spend points in anyone elses skills for that.

    Thanks again,
    Cor

A prompt will appear when you are within 10 or so items of the limit. If your pack is getting full just hit the store in the bowels of the ship. If you get over a million credits the store in at the Csec academy will sell some super spectre gear. Also you should make sure you talk to all of your companions in the ship after each primary quest you complete. This will open up some character driven quests as well as possible romances….And sorry, I know you were looking forward to it, but you can’t have a romance with Wrex.

Did you get any other games for your 360 or xbox live?

You sure about that? Awe man… 😉 I’d best be talking to people then since I did complete the Noveria main mission.

Just what came with it: Marvel Ultimate Alliance & Forza Motorsport.

I’m guessing that the xbox live is for multi-player? I’m a real noob at this so far. I haven’t played a game “system” really since the Atari 2600. lol so these controlers and terms are all new to me.

    Peace,

Marvel Alliance is a pretty good game, I bought that a while ago. Not a masterpiece by any means, but fun to play, especially if you have some people to play with, it supports up to 4 players. It is very similar to the X-men Legends series for PS2. It combines hack and slash (punch and kick) with some RPG elements, letting you control who’s in your party and leveling up your characters. Iron man is pretty money.
