It’s been about a year in the making, but I’m finally taking steps forward to teach a Board Game Design course here in Baltimore!
For those of you who don’t know, board games (and other tabletop games like D&D) have been a hobby of mine for many, many years. Only recently have I been trying to design my own board games; it’s actually one of my personal goals for 2010 to finally publish one of my own board game designs.
It’s with this in mind that I designed a board game course to be taught at the Baltimore Free School…This Autumn, it’ll be happening! I finally developed a rough outline and submitted a course synopsis today. The schedule still needs to be ironed out, but it’s now in the review process.
Is anyone out there a board game enthusiast? I know that not everyone here had been introduced to D&D the “old fashioned” paper-and-pencil method. Have favourite games to suggest? Have some suggestions on what you would expect to see in a game design course?
Please pass along any suggestions…they’ll only help! Thanks!

July 9, 2010 at 10:42 pm #58243Yeah, I love board games too. Design them? Heck no! Mine always tunr out to be sorta like.. monopoly, shits and latters… sorry…. or just a big maze. But to say the least I have put some thought into designing one and discovered I should stop trying.
A class… sounds like lots of fun!!! I hope you get the approval, that would be a blast to teach.
