Was browsing 4chan’s /tg/ forum when I first heard about it… the First DM Ever, it seems, has shuffled off the mortal coil at age 69… but not before leaving behind an immortal legacy in his wake.
Gary, despite the fact that we’ve never met, you’ve changed my life, and the lives of many, many people – most of which have yet to even realize it. You’ve made countless lives brighter, and the debt that is owed to you for kindling so many imaginations can never be repaid. The only reason we can make jests regarding Saves vs. Death and -10 hp is because of what you have done. You were… are… the father of gaming as we know it. Not only are you responsible for the birth of roleplaying, but your legacy can be traced to almost every modern computer and video game. The only reason this forum here exists is because of your work, and we all owe you a debt of gratitude. Although I guess the day was bound to come eventually, but it seems so out of place. One never expects for legends to pass away so suddenly. Your spot in our hearts can never be replaced. Godspeed.
March 4, 2008 at 7:31 pm #55741that’s the slashdot article that references the forum post where his death is reported. So far the reports are unsubstantiated beyond that post. If it is true it is truly sad news. I agree with Rasbedian he was the father of all this and I think we here do owe him a debt of gratitude.

March 5, 2008 at 1:48 am #55745Sad, but what a legacy. *Doffs cap*
March 5, 2008 at 2:26 pm #55746*Sighs* Remember those first soft cover books? Before all the fancy hard cover editions and the mass marketing? Takes a special kind of guy to create all that from nothing, and between the WotC, the massive amounts of D&D literature and all the related video games, etc. he helped create a billion dollar industry. Not bad for a “stupid game”, eh?
*Raises his wizard’s staff and casts “Protection From Evil”* Go get ’em Gary!
*Watches the knight in shining armor ride off into the sunset, sword and shield held high*
