Yeah, I saw it.
It was okay. I don’t think it was really Oscar material, but few flicks ever really are.
Acting
I have always thought Heath Ledger was a pretty damn good actor. And once again he pulls through. Despite certain protests, he did play a decent cowboy. Though we have to keep in mind, we aren’t talking about cowboys from the 1800’s. We are talking about dudes riding around in pickups in the 60’s through the 80’s. Jake Gyllenhaal was everything I thought he would be, meaning terrible. The guy is so flat, it’s like watching a Lucas flick. It was like watching Donnie Darko as Jack Twist. Pretty much the same character, except he had a Southwest twang to his speech. And he always had about a ton of mascara on. COME ON! Jeez, we know he is suppose to have a thing for men, but he doesnt need to be Priscilla Queen of the Desert! (which was a pretty good movie fyi)Direction
Ang Lee knows his stuff. No exceptions here. Nice camera work. Great job with blocking and directing. No real complaints about Mr Lee. Even when I don’t like the movie, I have to admit his directing is great. The Story
Okay here is where most of my beef is. Though a good 30% lies with Mr Gyllenhaal, cuz he sucks. The very first thing that bothered me was the moment Ennis and Jack get it on. It comes out of left field. I mean, sure they have spent a month together with a herd of sheep, but the passion really leaps out of nowhere. There’s no build up to it, other than Jack givin Ennis the eye when he’s nekkid. Through the rest of the movie, these two guys are in love with one another (timespan of 20 years), yet you never really get the feeling of them falling for each other. I guess gettin drunk around a campfire and talkin about your pa makes men bond in special ways. Guess I musta broke some hearts along the way. 😉And then there is a passage of time. Or at least is suppose to be. You never really feel it. Other than them saying “Damn its been 4 years” Or “We been comin up here every month for 6 years” Thank goodness there were children growing up otherwise I wouldnt have known. And slapping a moustache on a boyfaced actor doesnt really make him look older, but it does make him look like a member of the village people.
Last big beef. If you are gonna kiss your gay lover when you see him for the first time in 4 years, A: Don’t do it out in the open where the homophobes can see you from the road and B: Don’t do it right in front of your apartment where your wife is standing. That part, I must say, was stupid.
February 14, 2006 at 9:21 pm #38289*suspiciously* Did Hiker make you go see this ?
February 14, 2006 at 9:50 pm #38290Negative. I saw it by myself. I wasn’t feelin too good Friday, so I took the day off. I got bored so i went to the theatre and saw Firewall, which I am not even going to speak about (it’s everything you would expect plus more product placement than you can shake a stick at) and then crept into the theatre showing Brokeback. So I saw 1 bad and one so-so movie for the price of one.
What makes me laugh about the hoopla surrounding Brokeback is that it’s not like this is the first time this kind of movie has been made. There are a lot of Independant or small studio flicks out there with a similar story, they just don’t have big stars and directors behind them.
Dayhiker has a low tolerance for any movie that has things in it that will make her head hurt, such as the characters doing something totally self destructive. And furthermore, she really hates romances. Seriously. She loathes them. So far the exceptions I have found are: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but there is a whole lot of ass-whoopage going on to appease her taste for violence, and Say Anything, but that’s really a guy flick.
February 14, 2006 at 11:20 pm #38291Once again Hiker has helped me envy you.

Don’t forget my all-time favorite, The Princess Bride! It has kissing. And Twoo Wuv.

That stuff is like bloody plutonium…not only can it be used for Good or Evil but you don’t want any of it on you.
February 15, 2006 at 8:00 pm #38294Even better was Vru’s little rendition of Brokeback Desert last night with Ederyn. The entire time our lov.. I mean heroes stood atop the wall looking over the Timeless I was peppering poor Brak with Tells.
“Come see Brokeback Desert with me!”“Let’s run through the desert naked together!”
Then, to top it off, Ed starts digging into his robes and he says to Vru “I want you to hold something for me.”
I could NOT stop laughing. Fell out of my chair, tears in my eyes, Brak screaming at me to stop. Damn near woke the house up laughing so hard.
🙁 Then Ed had to go all serious and play his character well out there. TOTAL buzzkill.

February 15, 2006 at 9:03 pm #38297He forgot to mention as soon as he sent me a tell saying
“Brokeback…Brokeback Desert”
I sent one back
” Ever…ride..a woolly mammoth son ” ?
It just got worse from there with references to saddles, spurs and things best left unmentioned.
You notice when Ed said ” I have to change”…I just turned and looked at the gate because i was laughing so hard.
So hard to be serious with Ed and send back “brokeback” tells to BTP.
