A year. Nearly a year since I have last been in Foothold.
Familiar memories locked in his subconcious began to press to get out, and Sam silenced their cries and mentally slapped them back into their cages.
It had been pleasing to see the folks at the Red Dragon again. It helped him for a time to forget. Kel was still the fiesty, indominable, beauty she had always been. Portales was, well…Portales. I seem to have some difficulty suffering fools now, despite the fact that I am one, Sam thought to himself.
The two newcomers, a she-elf from the East named Cheng, and a narcoleptic beer-cured dwarf named Traudek were pleasant enough. Cheng seemed to stir something inside him, but Sam paid it little attention.
He could still hear them, Cheng, Keli and Portales in the private room of the Dragon. Sam himself had slung into the darkest corner table he could find after leaving them, ordered a strong wine, and pulled his hood up over his face. He watched as two of the local whores glanced in his direction as they walked by from the water closet. Sam recognized the one, but paid their inviting smiles no heed. As the wine did it’s numbing job, Sam slipped into a fugue of unrest and remembered.
Barrelgore’s rough shove brought him around again. Sam’s hand flew to the ornate handles of his rapiers, and then relaxed recognizing the minotaur. “Sod off, Sam” he said in his gruff manner, “Ye ain’t paid for no room. Time to get out afore I throws you out”.
Sam nodded, reached into his pocket and placed a stack of coins on the table, and assented to Barrelgore’s ‘request’ by adjusting his hood and walking out into the cold night of Foothold. Alone. More than half a year alone.
As the guard by the gatehouse motioned Sam to come over – it was late after all and this one was walking about hooded – Sam took a breath and dropped his easy mask into place. The guard recognized him, and returned Sam’s smile.
“Samirez the Entertainer, wasn’t it? Good to see you again! Where in Thrym’s Cold Desert has you been, man?”
“Out in the wide and wonderful world, my good sentry, out in the wide wonderful world. You know, wine, women…song?” Sam flashed his trademark grin and winked to the man. A short conversation later Sam left through the West gates, and into the Narlynwik – her favorite place – to try and find peace.

Also, keep in mind that under severe stress, people will vary from their alignments somewhat, if there is a good enough reason (to them) to do so.
I think this is where the confusion lies. You see there is chaos and law in everyone. Almost no one is free of one or the other, and those that are we call fanatics. If alignment is in fact a sliding scale, then those who end up on the ends are zealots. Paladins for example, especially Paladins of Justice such as those of Tyr. They are law personified. On the reverse side of the coin, those on the end of the chaotic scale are those such as servants of Loki, whi wantonly spread chaos with ferver.
MOST folk however are in between. And this is where the scale fails us. In between law and chaos is not neutrality, as true neutrality is an almost unattatainable goal for most people: it is focus on a goal without regard to chaos and law, and good or evil.
Balance on the otherhand, which is what Odin seeks to maintain. Personal balance is being both spontaneous and valuing personal freedom (consider when a new law that effects the way in which you MUST behave affects you) while at the same time respecting laws and appreciating order and trustworthyness.
Temper these then with Good and Evil. I would describe good in everyday life and a general want (or even to a lesser extent a “not mind”) to have people benefit from life, and to have a hand in it. It can also be decision to not perform action which result in injury or sadness to others aas a result of your actions. There are many ways this can be accomplished. For some, it can be accomplished with the assistance of law. For others, it can be accomplished by being free to bring joy to others lives by living unbound and unfettered.
Evil on the other hand in the opposite of these things. It is a concious decision or unconcious disposition towards not caring for peoples well-being, and considering the hurting of others to be an acceptable method of obtaining goals.
All that said, each person incorporates some of all of these things into a personality. As an example, my Chaotic Good bard Samirez is a pretty happy-go-lucky guy. He can be hardnosed when he has to be. He values his freedoms. Does this mean he chaffes at all law and riles against it? No. He demonstrates this by sneaking away from his wife to have a pint at the Inn and play a song or two. Her rule about staying in chaffes him, and since no one is hurt by him breaking the rule, he sneaks out the odd time. With regard to city laws – for him, good comes of them and he understands that without them his very livelyhood could be endangered. Does he question them? Yes! Is is organized? No, he prefers the open road and no timetable to live his life by. He was willing to part with some freedoms to live with Nashia.
My point in all this is there are many points to a sliding scale. From fanatacism to apathy and all points in between. It comes down to value. If you can answer what your character values and what your character doesn’t value, then the alignment is should be clear. Within that alignment, there are many chances for change and opportunities to look outside the alignment for decisions and actions without sacrificing core beliefs or being “shifted”. Let the character rule the alignment, and not the other way around.
LMAO!
Vlan had a smilar suggestion. Something like the Firebomb (which probably covers both suggestions, Boost) rather than alchemist’s fire.
Thanks guys for your suggestions. We’ll look into them. *Pictures that scene in 300 when the firebomb rolls back to the giant pile o’ firebombs*
Sweet.
I can’t get it from his sig either….
Thanks for that Voran, I appreciate the halfhearted attempt at making me feel better 😉 . However I KNOW this lot… 😆
All great stuff so far! Keep it going. We are taking these ideas and working them out within the context of the Markshire game world, so keep the ideas coming.
As LT mentioned, each item is considered on it’s own merit, and by a group of folks. Don’t be discouraged if your idea doesn’t make the list or if it is changed somewhat from the vision you have. We are trying to do the right things for the Server. That said, we entertain all crafting ideas and appreciate your feedback.
I for one am thrilled with the response so quickly!
